Interview with professional photographer Stephen Kohl: When did you become interested in photography? As a child, I was always intrigued by photography and asked for a nice camera when I was 16 years old. My passion of photography eventually turned from hobby to career. Where did you study photography? I studied photography at MTSU (Middle Tennessee State University) and worked as an assistant for more than 20 photographers during the first seven years of my career. How has your photography career evolved over the years? When I first started my photography business, I focused on product and advertising images. Since then I have transitioned into photographing people and products. My light and orginial composition techniques are a unique feature I add to my photography. Why is photography important to you? Taking photos is an insatiable desire of mine. I’ve always enjoyed being able to capture a scene or imagining a situation and then bring it to life. For me, the best experience is when I take a client’s vision and make it a visual reality. In your opinion, what makes a good photographer? A good photographer is someone who takes the time to see what the possibilities are with light, location and subject. Often I have heard the complaint about a photo location that “there is nothing to shoot.” However, I find that there is always something to shoot, but it takes the creative and imaginative person to realize such possibilities. |
